Overcoming your fears

Is fear robbing you? The solution is to change your focus.

fearFear is only a product of our minds and to overcome your obstacles and insecurities, you must change the way you perceive things, and the way you relate to them. It is rarely a reflection of your current reality, and it is usually the result of the anticipation of negative future events.

There are different ways in which people respond to fear:

• avoiding things and finding ways of getting around them
• giving in to the fear and doing nothing at all
• letting the fear be a catalyst and provoke them into action

The thing that you fear the most is often the one that stands in the way of what you really want. Do not let it rule your life! Recognize fear for what it is and let your fear act as a motivator to get you where you want to be. I am sure you have heard the phrase, ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. It is possible to fear something, and yet move past it and still go for what you want.

Even I have let fear hold me back in the past, and it kept me back from doing many things I really wanted to do. Eventually, I decided to do something about it. I did not want to get at the end of my life full of regrets for all the things I had not done. I finally decided to face my fears and push past them.

When thinking about it, I soon realized the things I feared the most, never actually happened. After that, I started asking myself what the worst thing could be if I started doing those things.
I soon realized that ridiculous thing held me back from stepping out of my Comfort Zone and I had to make a choice. I could carry on being afraid and let fear stop me form doing things, or I could face them, and do things in spite of being afraid. I decided not to let fear of failure stop me any longer.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said:

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

The secret is to acknowledge fear for what it is, and refuse to let it hold you back from reaching your dreams. The antidote to fear is taking action against it:

• develop a clear strategy for overcoming fear
• start taking action
• do a little bit every day towards overcoming your fear

Your plan will never be a perfect one. You will have to make adjustments as you go along with your plans. Discover what is working and what is not. In the moment you start taking action, your fear will start losing its power.

Focus on your plan, and take some action every day. It is very unlikely that your fears will disappear completely, because they have an annoying habit of showing up when you least expect them. Just ignore them, take a deep breath, and live your life the way you want to live it.

When stepping out of your Comfort Zone, and starting to do things that you’re afraid of doing, you will soon realize that fear was bigger then the thing itself, and there was really nothing to be afraid of. Things are rarely as bad as you picture them.

Do not let your fears rob you of your dreams. Do something towards overcoming them every day. Keep pushing through, and silence them forever.
